Many experts in the tech industry often talk about “the cloud” as if it were a mythical entity—untouchable, abstract, and detached from geography. The truth something very different. The cloud is built on very real infrastructure: data centers, fiber routes, satellite links, and power grids that exist at specific coordinates on the map. Those coordinates can be surveilled, targeted, and destroyed.

Last week, three data centers operated by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain were reportedly struck by Iranian drones or missiles, forcing the facilities offline and causing service outages across the region. The attacks were not random. They appear to have been aimed at infrastructure believed to support the digital backbone of Western military and intelligence activity.

This reality sits at the heart of what analysts now describe as Geo‑Poli‑Cyber warfare—the convergence of geopolitics, cyber operations, and physical conflict into a single operational battlefield. In this environment, military strategy no longer distinguishes cleanly between digital networks and physical infrastructure. Servers, cloud regions, undersea cables, AI compute clusters, and satellite links become strategic assets that adversaries may attack for geopolitical leverage.

Within the logic of Geo-Poli-Cyber warfare, this targeting makes strategic sense. Modern militaries increasingly rely on commercial cloud infrastructure to run intelligence analysis, battlefield simulations, logistics coordination, and command-and-control networks. Destroying or disrupting these platforms can degrade an adversary’s decision-making capabilities without directly striking traditional military bases.

“This is exactly the type of escalation that Geo-Poli-Cyber conflict predicted more than a decade ago,” said Khaled Fattal, internationally recognized author of the best-seller: Survivability: Confronting the New Geo‑Poli‑Cyber Age and a leading authority on Geo-Poli-Cyber risk, threats, and warfare.

“The cloud is not virtual—it is geography. Whoever controls or disrupts the physical infrastructure of data, communications, and AI gains strategic leverage over nations and economies. In the Geo-Poli-Cyber era, servers, satellites, and subsea cables are as consequential as aircraft carriers and oil fields.”

This attack is widely believed to be among the first deliberate air strikes against cloud infrastructure. Experts warn it will not be the last. As artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and network-centric warfare expand, data centers are rapidly becoming high-value strategic targets.

Military & Commercial No Longer Separate  

The boundary between commercial cloud computing and military operations has largely vanished. The United States Department of Defense runs major digital systems—including the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability and Joint All-Domain Command and Control—on commercial infrastructure. Meanwhile, reports indicate the U.S. military used AI models developed by Anthropic, including Claude, for intelligence assessments, target identification, and battlefield simulations during operations involving Iran.

This dual-use reality creates a new strategic dilemma. The same cloud servers that host financial services, e-commerce platforms, and ride-hailing apps may also support military data flows. Under the Geo-Poli-Cyber framework, adversaries may view commercial data centers as legitimate wartime targets if they believe those facilities contribute to an opponent’s military advantage.

“If data centers become critical hubs for transiting military information, we can expect them to be increasingly targeted by both cyber and physical attacks,” said Zachary Kallenborn, a researcher at King’s College London.

Historically, data center security has focused on preventing espionage or sabotage from individuals on the ground. Facilities are protected with fencing, biometric access, and surveillance systems. But most were never designed to withstand drone strikes, cruise missiles, or coordinated cyber-physical sabotage.

New “Cloud” Threat Vector

Data centers are large, visible installations dependent on exposed infrastructure—power substations, cooling systems, fiber landing points, and fuel supplies. Disabling any of these components can take an entire cloud region offline without a direct hit on the server halls themselves.

Experts now warn that facilities in volatile regions may require a radically different security model. “If companies are going to double down on infrastructure in the Middle East, it may mean missile defense systems protecting data centers,” said Chris McGuire, an AI and technology competition expert.

The vulnerability extends far beyond individual facilities. Seventeen submarine cables pass through the Red Sea, carrying a large portion of digital traffic between Europe, Asia, and Africa. At the same time, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz—a critical energy and shipping corridor—have escalated amid Iranian threats and Houthi activity.

These two choke points now represent both energy and data arteries of the global economy, placing them squarely within the strategic calculations of Geo-Poli-Cyber conflict.

The strikes on the UAE and Bahrain data centers also come at a pivotal moment for the Gulf’s ambitions to become a global hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure. During Donald Trump’s regional visit last year, governments announced more than $2 trillion in technology and infrastructure investment pledges, including the planned Stargate AI campus in Abu Dhabi, which would be among the largest AI compute facilities outside the United States. Amazon alone has committed billions toward AI and cloud infrastructure across the region.

For now, the Gulf’s advantages—cheap energy, strategic geography, and abundant capital—remain powerful incentives for technology companies. But the rise of Geo-Poli-Cyber warfare means that location now carries new risks.
